Food Prices Soared 2 Percent in March
Foodstuff prices soared 2 percent in March vs. April, RIA Novosti reported with reference to the Federal State Statistics Service, Rosstat.
The growth was the highest in Chechnya, where the food became more expensive by 2.8 percent and nonfood prices grew 3.7 percent.

In Moscow, the consumer price index was 100.9 percent for the month (104.6 percent from early this year) and St. Petersburg had 101.3 percent and 104.1 percent respectively.

The grain product manifested the record growth of the past seven months (i.e. from September of 2007). The prices for flour surged 6.2 percent in March, the prices for macaroni and for product of top-grade flour grew 6.1 percent, the prices for wheat bread and vermicelli stepped up 4.2 percent to 5.8 percent.

The growth in prices for vegetables and fruit continued in March. The vegetables cost 5.9 percent more on average and the prices for fruit and citrus product gained 6.3 percent. At the same time, the prices for banana surged 22.0 percent and the lemon prices increased 8.8 percent.
