United Russia Presses for Banning Tobacco Ads
A bill has been submitted to the State Duma that completely bans advertising of tobacco and smokables from July 1, 2008, RIA Novosti reported.
Under the bill submitted by United Russia’s faction to the State Duma, the tobacco ads will be banned everywhere but for the retail stores where it is sold. If the bill becomes a law, it will prohibit attracting non-adults to tobacco advertising and the free distribution of cigarettes will be banned as well.
The bill is aimed at adjusting Russia’s laws to requirements of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control of May 21, 2003. The Convention bans all advertising, promotion and sponsorship of tobacco and tobacco products.
In its current wording, Russia’s Act on Advertising bans only the tobacco advertising on TV, radio, via movies, on the front and last pages of newspapers and on magazine covers.
