Relatives of Crash Victims Get 1 Mln. Rubles
Relatives of the victims of the 2006 crash of a Siberian Airlines Airbus A-310 in Irkutsk will receive an average of 1 million rubles each. Sergey Polevod, the lawyer representing their interests, said that an out-of-court settlement had been reached in negotiations with the plane's insurer in London, where that insurance company is registered. “A compromise has been reached that satisfied both sides,” Polevod said. “Negotiations had gone on for about two years.”
According to the lawyer, it is unknown whether the insurance company or airline would pay the sum. Polevod represented the relatives of 32 victims of the crash. The relatives of 23 others were represented by another Moscow law firm.
The Moscow-Irkutsk Siberian (S7) Airlines flight was unable to stop after landing on July 9, 2007, and crashed through the cement wall around the airport and into nearby garages. There were 203 passengers on board, of whom 125 died. The plane was owned by the Airbus Leasing company, registered in New York.
Interstate Aviation Committee experts determined that the crash was caused by an error on the part of the crew. The airline disagreed with that funding. There is a criminal investigation in connection with the crash as well. It has yet to be completed. The deadline for the investigation has been extended to June 9 of this year.
