Algeria to Buy from Russia Combat Facilities Worth $8bn
The fact that Algeria has returned to Russia 15 MiG-29s won’t affect other defense contracts of the countries, RIA Novosti reported with reference to Federal Industry Agency chief Andrei Dutov.
When explaining the refusal to accept the jets, Algeria claimed some parts in them were of poor quality. But in Russia’s Federal Industry Agency (Rosprom), they blame the refusal on political rather than industrial reasons.
Russia clinched a deal for MiG-29 supplies under the $8-billion package agreement for military and engineering cooperation with Algeria. One of the provisions is the gradual write-off of that country's debt to the former Soviet Union; the amount is about $4.7 billion.
Russia will continue cooperating with Algeria on other military contracts despite the cancellation of MiG-29 deal. To be more precise, Russia intends to supply Su-30 fighters, S-300 missile defense systems, T-90 tanks and a submarine. Russia will also upgrade T-72 tanks and a few submarines of the Soviet days that Algeria bought in 1980s.
As to rejected MiG-29s, they will probably enter the inventory of the RF Air Force, the official said.
