Easy Victory in Iraq Is a Trap, Russia’s Senator Said
The easiness of the U.S. victory in Iraq is turning into a trap for the United States, the RF Federation Council Foreign Committee Chairman Mikhail Margelov said, when speaking about the five-year anniversary of the start of the U.S. military campaign in Iraq.
“Withdrawing the troops would mean acknowledging the combat defeat, while stationing them there endlessly is impossible for financial and political reasons. The same happened with the 40th Soviet Army in Afghanistan and such is the case with American military contingent in Iraq. The Armies don’t win political victories,” Margelov emphasized.

The senator also pointed out that exactly the war in Iraq is the highlight of the statements made by presidential candidates in the United States. If the democrats ultimately prevail, they will set to pulling out the troops of Iraq, Margelov supposed.

“The war in Iraq is another example [proving] it makes no sense to enforce by bombing and occupation the democracy in the Big Middle East,” the senator said, explaining that there, the enforcement of democracy usually inspires extremists. “Everything ends by it, no matter if it is a war or free election,” the senator concluded.
