Russia Claims Payment for Kalashnikov Assault Rifle Patents
Russia will attempt to make foreign makers of Kalashnikov assault rifles pay for respective patents, First Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov announced March 19, RIA Novosti reported.
In time of the former USSR, Ivanov reminded when addressing the Federation Council, certain technologies, including the defense ones, were transferred to foreign partners free of charge, while the patent law didn’t work practically.

According to Ivanov, Russia is currently in talks with a few countries concerning the payment for the intellectual property rights, including for the design of submachine guns. The licenses for Kalashnikov assembly, for instance, were transferred to 18 countries (China, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Germany, Egypt, Libya and others), and some of them continue the production despite the expiration of respective agreements.
