Russia’s Ambassador to U.N., Serbian Foreign Minister to Discuss Kosovo Mar 6
Russia’s Ambassador to U.N. Vitaly Churkin, who presides in the Security Council in March, and Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Eremic meet at the U.N. headquarters today to discuss Kosovo that declared independence from Serbia, RIA Novosti reported with reference to Maria Zakharova, briefer of Russia’s Permanent Representation at the United Nations.
The meeting was initiated by Serbia, Zakharova specified. “So far, we have no information about Serbia’s intention to initiate the Kosovo sitting of the Security Council. No official application has been received, while the March agenda of the Security Council doesn’t provide for such sitting. At the same time, new developments are possible by results of the meeting of Vitaly Churkin and Vuk Eremic,” the briefer explained.

The Kosovo report of Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to the Security Council had been slated for late March, Churkin told the reporters the day before at the news conference dedicated to the start of Russia’s presidency in the Council.

When presiding in the Security Council, Churkin went on, Russia would be monitoring the events in Kosovo. The official warned that any attempts of international organizations to oppose activities of the U.N. mission in Kosovo or take any retaliatory actions against the Kosovo Serbs that disagreed with the unilateral declaration of independence by the province would attract the attention of the Security Council.
