Gazprom to Cut Off Gas Supplies to Ukraine by Another Quarter
Late Tuesday, Russia’s gas giant Gazprom will cut off gas supplies to Ukraine by another quarter in addition to the 25-percent reduction announced on Monday, Gazprom spokesman Sergei Kupriyanov told the reporters.
It was decided to trim the supplies by another 25 percent at 8:00 p.m. March 4, Kupriyanov said, attributing the reduction to the lack of any progress in negotiations and the absence of contracts for the gas that has been already delivered to Ukraine.
Gazprom is ready to proceed with negotiations with Ukraine and the latter executes all obligations for the gas transit from Russia to Europe. “Gas supplies to the European consumers continue in whole,” Kupriyanov emphasized.
Ukraine hasn’t paid off all debt for 2007 supplies and has been consuming the gas without any contracts executed to the effect since early this year. Unlike the state-controlled Naftogaz, Gazprom’s restrictions don’t extend to the intermediaries - gas export monopoly, Rosukrenergo, and the import monopoly, Ukrgaz-Energo, representatives of both companies said Monday.
