U.S. to Extend Relationship with Russia’s New President
The administration of George Bush will extend relationship with Russia, which has been constructive so far, said Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
“The United States will try to work for a constructive relationship,” Condoleezza Rice said en route to meetings in the Middle East, The Associated Press reported. At the same time, Rice declined to comment on the progress in presidential election in Russia.
“You’ve heard me comment about the general trends in Russia. I don’t need to repeat it,” Rice said, reminding about her recent statement that they all “look forward to the day when there’s a contested presidential election in Russia with all the protections that that means.”
The White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe said Monday that President Bush looked forward to working with Medvedev after he replaces Putin and that the U.S. president will talk to the president-elect in the near term.
In Russia, the nation elected First Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev a new president past Sunday. Officially backed up by President Putin, Medvedev had been the obvious frontrunner of the election.
