Europe Congratulates Medvedev with Victory
Leaders of European states and organizations have congratulated Dmitry Medvedev with the victory at March 2 presidential election in Russia.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy was one of the first to congratulate Dmitry Medvedev with being elected a new president of Russia. Sarkozy invited Medvedev to visit France and his invitation was accepted.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel also congratulated Medvedev. Ms Merkel is ready to cooperate with Russia’s new president and is willing to meet him and Vladimir Putin. At the same time, Germany emphasized that not all democratic and constitutional principles were observed during the election campaign.

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso welcomed Medvedev as well, hoping that EU and Russia would strengthen and develop strategic partnership based not only on common interests but also on values that they had pledged to respect in the statements.

Britain’s PM Gordon Brown announced he sent a letter to Medvedev to congratulate him with the victory at presidential election.
