Clinton, Obama Criticize Election of Russia’s President
U.S. democratic presidential candidate Sen. Hillary Clinton and her rival Sen. Barack Obama have commented on March 2 presidential election in Russia.
According to Clinton, the recent election in Russia was a retreat from democracy. "Today's presidential election in Russia - where the installation of Dmitry Medvedev as Vladimir Putin's self-designated successor was never in doubt - marks a milestone in that country's retreat from democracy," Clinton said as quoted by Reuters.

Clinton pointed out at the same time that Medvedev had made a few statements during the election campaign that inspired some optimism, so the task of the U.S. new president would be to test those words in practice.

Barack Obama expressed his general disappointment with Russia’s presidential election, claiming it hadn’t been fully free and fair because of the absence of free media and crackdown on political parties and opposition.

The U.S. White House and Department of State are yet to comment on the presidential election in Russia. The results were not final and commenting would be premature, said White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe.
