Sberbank Intends to Enter Asian Market
Savings Bank of Russia (Sberbank) president German Gref told journalists after a meeting of territorial branch Sberbank representatives that “I think we will undertake a number of efforts to enter the market in Eastern Europe and Asia.” He said that Sberbank has already taken the first step in that process by making an analysis of the banking market in India.
Gref added that the possibility of Sberbank entering the European market was discussed at a recent meeting with a European Commission commissioner. Sberbank is also interested in the CIS market. Gref estimated that it would take five years to realize the banks overseas plans.

“We intend to become one of the largest banks in the world,” Gref said. “We have specific tasks for increasing the bank's capitalization.” He declines to identify those tasks.
