Russia Says Kosovo Not Unique
Russia does not agree with the United States that the situation in Kosovo is unique, and it intends to continue to discuss the issue. Kosovo's self-declared independence could lead to a worldwide chain reaction, deputy press secretary to the Russian president Dmitry Peskov insists. “We cannot agree with our American colleagues that Kosovo is a unique case," Peskov told an audience of political scientists and journalists on Wednesday at the Nixon Center in Washington.
The United States and Russia “will have to discuss that, whether we want to or not,” Peskov added, because, since Kosovo's declaration of independence, “unfortunately, several first signs of a chain reaction are seen.” Peskov warned that Kosovo's independence was “hailed with joy” in many areas of conflict, which will cause “very serious problems.”
The Kosovar parliament, which is made up of mainly of representatives of the Albanian population of the territory, voted Sunday to declare independence from Serbia unilaterally.
