Ivanov Says It's a Jungle Out There
Russia continue to draw attention to the precedent-setting nsture of the recognition of Kosovo's independence in circumvention of the UN Security Council. First Prime Minister Sergey Ivanov told journalists in St. Petersburg that Kosovo's independence violates principles of international law. “A situation of complete unpredictability is arising,” Ivanov said, “a type of law of the jungle, and the Russian Federation is making certain conclusions from that situation.”
“A chain reaction will follow as many people say, How are we worse?'” Ivanov said. He refuted claims that the situation in Kosovo was unique with a comparison with Abkhazia. “There was war in both places, there were crimes and probably genocide,” Ivanov said. “One side won in both places and there were numerous referenda in both places.” The difference, he said, was that it all took place in Abkhazia mush earlier.
The United States, France, Great Britain and Australia were the first countries to recognize Kosovo as a new state. It is expected that the majority of European Union members will recognize it in the near future. The efforts of Russia and Serbia to reverse the decision of the Pristina authorities using UN mechanisms have been unsuccessful. Consultations between the two sies have been unproductive.
