Russia Will Have Its Eye on Those Who Recognize Kosovo
Moscow has stated that it will watch those who recognize Kosovo's independence from Serbia. “Unilateral recognition of the independence of Kosovo is illegitimate from the point of view of international law, for it contradicts UN Security Council Resolution 1244, the Helsinki Accords and the agreement of the contact group,” stated Dmitry Peskov, first deputy press secretary of the president of Russia.
Peskov added that Moscow would carry out “very careful monitoring of the situation from the point of view what other states recognize the independence of Kosovo and if they do so” and “act through all possible international mechanisms, mainly the UN and its Security Council, of course.” He also praised “Belgrade's intention to take a position of a constructive character.” Serbia has refused to recognize the authority of the UN mission in Kosovo and the Kosovars declaration of independence.

Chairman of the Federation Council Committee of Foreign Affairs Mikhail Margelov said the precedent set by Kosovo “will inspire separatists not only in Europe, but in the Middle East as well. He compared the situation to “Eastern Timor in the center of Europe” and pointed out a variety of hotspots in the Middle East were a backlash may be felt.
