Russia Explores Arctic to Prove Right to a Shelf Portion
Russia’s exploration in Arctic is aimed at proving the right to a portion of shelf, President Vladimir Putin said during the big annual press conference held in the Kremlin Thursday, RIA Novosti reported.
“As to our exploration, its purpose, of course, is to prove that the Russian Federation has the right to a certain potion of the shelf, but we are doing it in the framework of existing international procedures, in the framework of the U.N.,” Putin said.

Russia is collecting evidences to prove its rights to a certain portion of the Arctic shelf, but it is open for objective dialogue, Putin said, specifying his surprise about the nervous response of Canada to planting Russia’s flag on the bottom of the Arctic Ocean. "The Americans planted the flag in the moon. What’s the point of worrying about it? The moon hasn’t passed into the U.S. ownership,” the president emphasized.
