Ford Mondeo to Be Assembled in Russia
The Ford Motor Co. will begin making the Mondeo at its plant in Vsevolozhsk, Leningrad Region, in September, according to an announcement made at the Autoinvest 2008 conference. The plant will make 25,000 of the cars next year, as well as 100,000 Ford Focus models. A thousand additional workers will be hired as well.
The Ford plant was the first in Russia to be wholly owned and operated by an international auto company when it opened in 2002. Construction and expansion of the plant has been carried out with investments of $230 million so far. The plant's capacity at the moment is 72,000 vehicles per year. It now makes four models of the Focus.
Ford sales in Russia were up 52 percent in 2007 over 2006 to 175,793 vehicles. Of those 90,383 were Focus models (up 23.02 percent in a year) and 43,341 were Fusion models (up 162 percent). The Focus is the most popular foreign car in Russia.
