Israel Apologized for Aggressive Peer
International Olympic Committee member Alex Gilady apologized for behavior of Shahar Peer during the Fed Cup match against Russia. Peer had incited the home crowd, Gilady said.
Fed Cup champs Russia won the quarter-final tie in Israel February 2 and 3 to the greatest disappointment of home fans, who clearly violated general tennis rules during the standoff. When Russia’s Maria Sharapova was playing Israeli Shahar Peer, for instance, some spectators mimicked Sharapova’s grunting sounds as she hit the ball.
The crowd was incited by Shahar Peer, Gilady said, specifying that he had sent a letter of apology to Russian Fed Cup captain Shamil Tarpischev.
Of interest is that the Israel Tennis Association didn’t back up the apology of Gilady but rejected his attack on Shahar Peer, who is the number 1 in the Israeli team.
