Nuclear Agency Will Close Next Month
The presidential order to close the Federal Agency for Atomic Power (Rosatom) will be ready by next month, head of the Rosatom state corporation Sergey Kirienko told journalists today. Previously, that order was expected to be signed before the end of this month. Kirienko said the document is now in the process of conciliation. It will liquidate the federal agency and transfer its authority to the new Rosatom state corporation.
A liquidation committee will be set up after the order is signed. The liquidation of the agency will take at least half a year, Kirienko said. The federal law creating the Rosatom state corporation came into force on December 6, 2007. It creates a special corporation that will combine power production with industry. There will be a transition period of up to three years during which government property in the atomic complex will be transferred to the new state corporation.

Kirienko headed the nuclear agency before being appointed to head the corporation. Former deputy head of the agency Ivan Kamenskikh will take over at the agency for the remainder of its existence. Kirienko said that Rosatom Corp. will rank among the world's top four companies in the atomic sector, along with the Areva/Siemens, Toshiba/Westinghouse and General Electric/Hitachi alliances.
