Khodorkovsky Declares Hunger Strike
Former YUKOS oil company head Mikhail Khodorkovsky has declared a hunger strike in solidarity with former YUKOS vice president Vasily Aleksanyan. Khodorkovsky will take neither food nor water for the duration of his action. Aleksanyan, who has AIDS, is being detained in a holding facility and has not been allowed treatment in civilian health facilities. The Russian Supreme Court refused to head an appeal of that decision on January 22.
Khodorkovsky went on a hunger strike in May 2006 to protest his transfer to solitary confinement after a fight. His former business associate Platon Lebedev was also placed in solitary confinement at that time after he declared a hunger strike as well and refused to leave his cell.
Aleksanyan was arrested on April 6, 2006, and charged with large-scale embezzlement and money laundering. Specifically, he is accused of embezzling stock in Tomskneft and Eastern Oil Co. worth a total of 12 billion rubles. In July 2006, he was charged with tax evasion as well. A representative of the General Prosecutor's Office has confirmed that Aleksanyan is suffering from AIDS.
