Olympic Preparations Hit Snag in Sochi
Preparations for the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi may be interrupted because of the poor condition of border facilities in Krasnodar Territory, Federal Customs Service head Andrey Belyaninov stated during the “government hour” in the Federation Council yesterday. Those conditions do not meet the requirements set out in the Game preparation plans.
Belyaninov cited problems that are expected to arise in the near future. For instance, greater volumes of construction materials will be ordered from Abkhazia, but there is no bridge that can handle heavy trucks.
Olympic preparations have been planned in several stages. Fifty-one facilities are scheduled to be built in the area of Krasnaya Polyana this year. They will include a tramway, ski slopes, three hotels and a cottage settlement. In the second stage of construction (2008-2011), an Olympic ski stadium will be built, as well as seven more tramways, a cultural center and 15 km. of ski routes.
