Medvedev Now a Registered Candidate
First Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev was not present at his registration by the Central Election Commission this morning but was represented by secretary of the presidium of the United Russia Party Vyacheslav Volodin. Volodin is to pass on the registration documents to Chief of the Presidential Executive Staff Sergey Sobyanin, who is also Medvedev's campaign manager, who will give them to the candidate himself.
The application for registration was filed with the CEC on January 14. Medvedev is the third candidate to register. Communist leader Gennady Zyuganov and LDPR leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky registered earlier. As members of parties that are represented in the State Duma, they are not required to gather signatures in their support. Presidential hopefuls Mikhail Kasyanov and Andrey Bogdanov turned in 2 million voters' signatures to the CEC on January 16. The commission is to verify those signatures by January 27.
First Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev is not a member of nay party, although he was nominated by the United Russia Party, which received a constitutional majority in the State Duma in the December parliamentary elections. Medvedev was nominated after consultations with the Civil Force, Agrarian and Just Russia Parties and he has been endorsed by current Russian President Vladimir Putin.
