St. Petersburg Office of British Council Halted Projects for 3 Weeks
The British Council’s office in St. Petersburg has halted the projects for three weeks due to activities’ suspension, RIA Novosti reported January 18 with reference to Stanislav Smirnov, briefer at the regional branch of the British Council.
“The British Council had been implementing in St. Petersburg a number of projects related to culture and foreign ties. We froze the projects for the following three weeks,” Smirnov said.
The chance is that Festival of Britain’s Animation won’t open in St. Petersburg Movies Center February 14. “We have frozen the preparation. If anything changes in the nearest two weeks, we will convene it,” Smirnov promised, specifying that some 20 persons, including two British citizens, currently work in St. Petersburg office of the British Council.
The clashes of Russia and Britain aggravated anew once the British Council offices in St. Petersburg and Yekaterinburg resumed working after the New Year break despite the Kremlin’s order to halt operations January 1 due to the absence of regulations governing the British Council activities in Russia. St. Petersburg office closed January 16.
The British Council suspends its activities in Russia’s regions but the Moscow office will proceed with the work, Martin Davidson, chief executive of the British Council, announced Thursday.
