Sharapova Crushed Davenport in Australian Open
Russia’s Maria Sharapova has advanced to the third round in the Australian Open tennis tournament after crushing ex-number one Lindsay Davenport 6-1, 6-3. Maria next plays her compatriot Elena Vesnina.
Sharapova won the first five games and the whole set in no time. In the second set, the seventh game was crucial, but fascinating Sharapova pressurized to break at the score of 3-3. The fifth seed Russian won two more games after it and finally prevailed at 6-1 6-3.

Elena Vesnina and Elena Dementieva have also progressed to the 1/16 finals. Vestina will play Sharapova and Dementieva is to oppose Israel’s Shahar Peer in the next effort. Olga Puchkova and Yaroslava Shvedova suffered the losses.

In the men’s section of Australian Open, Russia’s Nikolay Davydenko, Mikhail Youzhny and Igor Andreev marched to the third round. Evgeny Korolev yielded to Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber, having refused to continue the fight at the score of 4-6 2-6 1-0.
