Court Refused to Strip Saakashvili of Presidential Victory
The City Court of Tbilisi has overruled suits of the opposition seeking cancellation of the final protocol of the Central Election Commission that confirms re-election of Mikhail Saakashvili, Trend news agency reported.
Annulling election results was the demand of united opposition that includes nine political forces, Labor party, the staff of former presidential candidate Badri Patarkatsishvili and free trade union of education employees. The court reasoned their claims were ill-grounded and the suits had been filed with procedural violations.
The opposition intends to go to Supreme Court to appeal the decision, but it will be hardly upheld there. At the same time, the activists are resolved to proceed with the fight against the regime aimed against the nation, they say.
The opposition claims the presidential elections were rigged in Georgia and calls for the second-round run-off. Saakashvili’s opponents have been rallying in Tbilisi since January 13.
