Tanks to Return to Red Square May 9
Combat vehicles will again parade in the Red Square May 9, 2008, first time in the last 17 years, Interfax reported with reference to the sources with Russia’s Defense Ministry.
Moscow Military District Commander Vladimir Bakin made the respective decision January 12, 2008. Topol-M mobile missile complex will also take part in the parade of 6,000 officers and soldiers, all dressed in the new uniforms.
The combat vehicles last paraded in the Red Square’s paving stones November 7, 1990. No parades were staged from 1991 through 1994. There was a parade May 9, 1995, of course, as it was the 50th anniversary of Russia’s victory in the WW2, but that time the troops marched in Poklonnaya Gora instead of the Red Square. The parades resumed in the Red Square next year, but they lacked the impression usually produced by the tanks.
