Supreme Court Upheld Denial to Register Bukovsky Presidential Candidate
The Supreme Court of Russia has sustained the resolution of Central Election Commission denying to register Vladimir Bukovsky the presidential candidate, representatives of the court said.
Therefore, the court has overruled the complaint of Bukovsky’s lawyers seeking to acknowledge illegal the decision of Central Election Commission and win the presidential candidate status for their client.
Bukovsky was turned down for three reasons. The ex-dissident and today’s writer Bukovsky has the residence permit in another state (Britain), he hadn’t submitted the data about his writing activities to the Central Election Commission and he hasn’t been the permanent resident of Russia in the last ten years, as it is required by laws.
But all legal efforts of Bukovsky’s followers could be primarily targeted not at winning the court support but rather at establishing a precedent, attracting the public at large and adding their own intrigue to the election race. Bukovsky isn’t very popular in Russia. According to various sociological polls, he is supported by less than a percent of potential voters here.
