Japan to Construct Artificial Islands Near Sochi
The firms of Japan will take part in creating artificial islands close to Sochi coastline when preparing for 2014 Olympics, said Aslan Atabiev, who chairs the board of Russia’s-Japan’s Business Council.
“We are well aware of problems that the Emirates faced when creating artificial islands, so Japan’s participation and their technology are extremely interesting for Russia,” Atabiev told the press conference in Tokyo Friday. More than ten artificial islands will be constructed in the Sochi region to host a portion of Olympic facilities, Atabiev said.

According to ex-defense minister of Japan and today’s chief of Japan’s committee for Sochi 2014 Olympics Fumio Kyuma, they had decided to join the project after receiving a respective letter from Sochi authorities. The committee’s chief said Russia’s companies aren’t skilled enough in constructing artificial islands the more so in the regions of higher seismic activity, so Japan’s experience will be of great value for Russia.

The assistance rendered when preparing the 2014 Olympics will positively affect relations of the countries, Kuyma hoped, pledging to endeavor to create islands that will be of least equal to the ones in Dubai.
