Caps’ Ovechkin Signed 13-Year Contract Extension
Forward of Russia’s hockey squad, Alex Ovechkin, has extended his contract with Washington Capitals by 13 years for $124 million, according to Associated Press.
Ovechkin made the NHL debut in 2005/2006, winning the top rookie’s prize of the league. He had 52 goals and 54 assists in the first season and 46 goals and 46 assists in the next one. This season, the 22-year Russian has 32 goals and 20 assists already, being the most efficient player of NHL.

His previous contract with Capitals was due to expire in July of 2008, paying to Ovechkin $3.83 million this season. The Russian would have become a free agent at the end of the season, but the Capitals would have had the right to outbid any offer made by another team.

But according to the new contract, Ovechkin will have $9.54 million each season on average till July of 2021, which is more than paid to the NHL star Sidney Crosby of Pittsburgh, who clinched a five-year deal past year and gets $8.7 million a season.

“I’m happy to stay here. It’s my second home. I like the fans. I like the team. I like everything here,” Ovechkin said as quoted by AP.
