Rogozin to Stand for Russia in NATO
Ex-leader of Rodina (Motherland) Party, Dmitry Rogozin, has been appointed Russia’s envoy to NATO in Brussels. President Vladimir Putin sealed the respective ruling, relieving simultaneously Konstantin Totsky of his NATO post.
The decision to commission Rogozin to NATO was reported late in past year. Russia’s upper house of parliament, the Federation Council, backed up his candidacy November 13.
Rogozin is notorious for the tough rhetoric aimed at the West, and the decision to appoint him the NATO envoy set wondering quite a number of analysts. But this policymaker manifested his negotiating talent in 2000 to 2004, when talking over the visa-free transit via Lithuania to the Kaliningrad region. In many respects, exactly the efforts of Rogozin enabled Russia to work out a relatively acceptable solution for the problem.
The PACE activities of Rogozin shouldn’t be forgotten either. In time when Russia was lambasted at large for Chechnya’s policy, Rodina’s future leader was openly debating with Lord Judd, the most argent critic of the Kremlin.
