Georgian Ombudsman Acknowledges Vote Tampering
Georgian People's Defender (ombudsman) Sozar Subari has stated that falsification took place in the course of the January 5 presidential elections. He also noted “high use of administrative resources” and called for the situation to be rectified before the next elections. “The fact that the traditional Georgian election results, when the presidential candidate wins with 70-90 percent of the vote, shows that the Georgian people are the masters of their fate,” he added.
Chairman of the Central Elections Commission Levan Tarkhnishvili reported that the commission has requested that the prosecutor's office investigate the violations uncovered. Tarkhnishvili said that members of two local election commissions took ballots and the documentation for them home with them after the voting. “We have transferred both cases to the prosecutor so that the guilty parties will receive harsh punishment. That will be an example to the rest,” Tarkhnishvili said.

Mikheil Saakashvili was declared the winner of the race on Wednesday, with 52.21 percent of the vote, far ahead of his nearest rival, Levan Gachechiladze, representing the united opposition. The opposition has already disputed the election results.
