MERT in Favor of Unlimited Steel Trade with the USA
July 7, “The quota on Russian steel supplies to the US expires in July, and will be followed by unlimited trade,” Head of Trade Negotiations Department of the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade (MERT) Maksim Medvedkov told Interfax at a conference “Integration of the Russian Business to the Global Economy: Prospects for the Process’ Participants,” organized by Association of Managers in Moscow on Wednesday.
“It is our fundamental position,” Medvedkov added. As reported earlier, July 12, 1999, the RF and the USA signed a comprehensive agreement on some kinds of steel production for 5 years. The agreement, upon the US request was tied to the treaty on suspension of anti-damping procedure against Russian hot-rolled metal supplies to the American market. It sharply limited access of the Russian steel products to American market.
