Saakashvili Wants Better Relations
Mikheil Saakashvili has stated that, should he emerge as the winner in the Georgian presidential race, voting in which took place on January 5, he will improve relations with Russia. “The first step for us will be the search for new opportunities to improve the very poor relations with Russia,” Saakashvili told a Reuters correspondent on Monday.
Among the causes of the deterioration of relations between Tbilisi and Moscow analysts list Georgia's pro-Western orientation and the country's desire to join NATO.

Preliminary data indicate that Saakashvili will win in the first round of presidential elections by gaining over 50 percent of the vote. At present, the Georgian Central Elections Commission has counted 85 percent of votes and found that Saakashvili has received 51.94 percent of them.
