Campaigning Finished in Georgia
The campaign period in the Georgian presidential election ended Thursday at midnight. January 4 is a “quiet day” before the elections are held. The country's prosecutor general's office has set up a hotline to report violations of the quiet. The Georgian Central Elections Commission reports that everything is ready for the vote. About 800 foreign observers have come for the election. More than 200 more are expected to arrive today.
There are seven candidate running. Former president Mikheil Saakashvili resigned to run again. In addition, businessman Badri Patarkatsishvili, united opposition candidate Levan Gachechiladze, Labor Party leader Shalva Natelashvili, New Right Party leader David Gamkrelidze, Hope Party leader Irina Sarishvili and Party of the Future leader (who formerly handled PR for Saakashvili) Georgy Maisashvili are also running.

The first results are expected to come in on January 6 and the final results will be announced by the Central Elections Commission four days after the vote. If no one of the candidates received over 50 percent of the vote, a second round of voting will be held in which the two leading candidates will face off.
