Baikonur Launches This Year’s Last Booster Today
This year’s last launch from Baikonur cosmodrome that will put into orbit three GLONASS navigation satellites is slated for today, December 25, a representative of Russia’s Roskosmos Space Agency told RIA Novosti.
The satellites will be delivered to orbit by upgraded Proton-M booster; previously, they were put into orbit by Proton-K. Proton-M is due to blast off at 10:32 p.m., MSK, the agency’s representative said.
It will be the second launch of Proton with GLONASS satellites after the joint meeting of government’s commissions of Russia and Kazakhstan that probed into the reasons and estimated consequences of September 6 emergency launch of Proton-M.
The officials approved conclusions of the commission and confirmed that the actions aimed at ensuring safety of subsequent launches had been duly carried out at available boosters of Proton type, including the boosters used to launch GLONASS-M satellites.
Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS) is designated to ensure globally the real-time, high-precision navigation and time support to unlimited number of clients of land, air or sea basing as well as to determine precise position of ships, aircraft, special automotive vehicles.
