Fifth Duma Set to the First Meeting
The Fifth State Duma has opened its first sitting, which is attended by 427 of 450 legislators. Till election of the speaker, the State Duma is chaired by its oldest member, Zhores Alferov (Communist Party of the RF).
The first sitting of Russia’s lower house of parliament is attended by Prime Minister Viktor Zubkov and Federation Council Speaker Sergei Mironov. The agenda sets forth election of speaker (Boris Gryzlov, United Russia), vice speakers, establishment of Duma committees, election of their chairpersons and registration of factions.
Today’s State Duma will have four factions, United Russia, Communist Party of the RF (CPRF), LDPR and Fair Russia, and 32 committees. Of them, 26 will go to United Russia.
