Vedomosti Sent Putin to Gazprom BOD
If elected the president of Russia in 2008, Dmitry Medvedev will have to vacate the office of Gazprom BOD chairman and Vladimir Putin is the most probable successor, Vedomosti edition reported with reference to top-ranked bureaucrats, who are close to the Kremlin, and to political analysts.
Of the record, the sources say that a certain technical candidate will first chair Gazprom, and Putin will take over the monopoly after a while. In Russia, the PM office doesn’t prevent bureaucrats from holding significant positions in commercial structures. Russia’s previous PM Mikhail Fradkov, for instance, chaired Vneshekonombank’s Supervisory Board.
Medvedev is hardly a technical figure in Gazprom. He is actively dealing with quite a number of issues that are acute for monopoly. Medvedev personally participated in Gazprom’s negotiations with BASF (Yuzhno-Russkoe field) and with TNK-BP (Kovykta field). He also took part in a few international meetings.
On December 17, Vladimir Putin publicly agreed to head the government in time of Medvedev’s presidency. On December 20, Medvedev said he would leave Gazprom should he win the elections. People in Gazprom haven’t commented Medvedev’s potential successor yet.
