Russia’s Masterpieces Not to Be Exhibited in London
The exhibition of Russia’s paintings won’t open in London, Interfax reported December 19 with reference to Irina Antonova, general director of Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts.
The exhibition, From Russia: French and Russian Master Paintings 1870-1925, won’t go to London. Instead, it is coming back to Russia from Dusseldorf, Irina Antonova told Interfax Wednesday.
“I learnt about it only past night. The British party hasn’t guaranteed the return of exposition that includes Russia’s and French master paintings from four museums of Russia – our Pushkin Museum, Hermitage, Tretyakov Gallery and the Russian Museum,” Antonova explained.
“As the negotiations on those guarantees weren't crowned with success, it was decided to bring back all exposition to Russia,” she specified.
The landmark exhibition was to open in London January 26. “But the situation is that we could have proceeded to this exhibition provided there had been the absolute government’s guarantee of the host country, i.e. of Great Britain, for its return.”
“Not so long ago, there was a situation when the return of our paintings after the exhibition in Europe was under the threat,” Antonova reminded. “We won’t keep making the same mistakes.”
