Russia Won’t Build Up Armaments in Europe
Russia has no intention to build up armaments in the European portion of the country, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced Tuesday, when addressing reporters after negotiations with his Latvian counterpart Maris Riekstins.
“Despite the suspension of Russia’s participation in the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe, Russia doesn’t intend to build up armaments in the European portion of the country,” Lavrov announced.

According to Lavrov, imposing the moratorium on CFE Treaty doesn’t necessarily mean that Russia will no longer negotiate with Western partners.

“We aren’t closing the door, we are ready to proceed with negotiations if the NATO states discuss our legitimate worries instead of the fictitious ones,” Lavrov explained, pointing out that Russia is interested in maintaining the CFE Treaty as a lever to control conventional forces in Europe.
