Russians Legalized 5bn Rubles over 9 Months
The Russians made legal 5 billion rubles by December 1, having paid 611 million rubles in taxes, the RF Audit Chamber chief Sergei Stepashin said when speaking about the progress in legalization of revenues derived prior to January 1, 2006.
The amount of paid taxes isn’t big, Stepashin specified, pointing out that “it isn’t the question of money but rather of principle. It is necessary to create in Russia the atmosphere of mutual trust between the government and citizens.”
The matter at stake is the law that took effect March 1, 2007 to last till January 1, 2008. It enables the residents to legalize revenues in respect of which they evaded tax payments.
The process is expected to accelerate in the remaining two weeks. “No figures have been planned for the budgets, anything we get will be OK,” pointed out Deputy Finance Minister Sergei Shatalov.
The effect of the law will be hardly prolonged. Judging by the respective experience of other nations, the tax amnesty campaign gains momentum in its last two or three weeks, said Stanislav Voskresensky, member of the RF president’s expert department.
