Election Authority Counted Presidential Candidates
From five to eight persons will campaign for presidency in Russia, forecasted Igor Borisov from Central Election Commission. The elections are slated for March 2.
“We expect from five to eight persons to actually contest in the RF presidential election campaign,” Borisov told reporters in Moscow on Monday.

According to Borisov, the Central Election Commission has roughly 20 applications but no more than 10 persons will reach meetings of initiative groups. Political parties will nominate approximately the same number at the first stage, the official said.

The nomination process is very complicated, Borisov pointed out explaining that all candidates but for those put forward by parliamentary parties are to collect at least 2 million signatures in their support.

“The checking procedure is rather tough today. It provides for no more than 5 percent of rejects,” he said, supposing that only eight persons will be finally registered.

The deadline for registration is January 26, Borisov reminded. The names of candidates added to the ballots will be known exactly on that day.
