Traffic Accident Rate Comparable to National Disaster, Interior Minister Said
Russia’s Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliev chaired Friday the meeting of his ministry’s board. Implementation of the Federal Target Program, Traffic Safety in 2006 to 2012, including the appalling rate of the traffic accidents in Russia, was the highlight of that event.
“In the recent years, the accident rate on Russia’s roads could be compared to the disaster of national extent. Some 100 die each day as a result of traffic accidents,” Nurgaliev said.

As many as 194,000 traffic accidents were registered in Russia during ten months of this year. The death toll reached 27,900, mostly the people younger than 40 years old and the children. “Those were the people in the prime of life, the most active and promising portion of the population,” the minister pointed out.

The meeting of Interior Ministry’s board was attended by Nurgaliev’s deputies, chiefs of departments and representatives of some other ministries. Nurgaliev particularly emphasized the need to coordinate efforts of different ministries and departments to execute the program.
