Ignoring CFE Treaty Makes U.S. Free in Moving Troops
The disregard for the CFE Treaty in Europe enables the United States to freely station and move troops there, Chief of Russia’s General Staff Yuri Baluevsky announced in Washington Thursday.
On November 19, 1999, Baluevsky said, Russia signed the CFE Treaty Adaptation Agreement together with three states, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Ukraine, and ratified the agreement. The remaining countries have forgotten about their commitments and their forgetfulness suits well to Pentagon, allowing it to freely determine the troops configuration in Europe.
The state of forgetfulness has extended to new NATO members, the top general said, specifying he referred to the Baltic nations. Exactly the Baltic states are currently in the so-called grey zone, which is actually under control of no agreement that spells out the number and quality of armaments.
“As a man, who is bound by duty to evaluate the situation, I am trying to understand what for to develop the infrastructure for accepting different kinds of vessels and aircraft in the Baltic territory. Just as I am trying to understand what for to set up the advance bases in Romania and Bulgaria,” the general said, adding that there are quite a number of those what fors and the General Staff has no answers to them.
Russia’s moratorium on CFE Treaty takes effect December 12.
