Putin to Remain President till May 2008
A new president of Russia, whom the nation elects March 2, 2008, will get the authority no sooner than in May of 2008. Under the RF Constitution, a new president is inaugurated on expiration of four years of the day of the previous president’s inauguration.
“As Vladimir Putin was inaugurated in May, the inauguration of the future president will happen in May as well. So, a newly-elected president of the Russian Federation will rise to authority in May, though the elections will be held March 2,” said Maya Grishina from Central Election Commission.

The Central Election Commission will make out a final list of presidential candidates by January 27, Grishina specified.

A candidate is nominated and registered through several stages, Grishina reminded. If a candidate is nominated by a political party, the respective resolution is to be taken till December 23, 2007. A candidate, who independently nominates himself/herself, should submit all documents to the Central Election Commission by December 18, 2007.

“Once this stage is passed and all documents correspond to the law, a candidate is to provide to the Central Election Commission the signatures of electors in his/her support at least by January 16,” Grishina said. The exception is candidates of State Duma parties. They could be registered with Central Election Commission automatically, when presenting the first accounting report. Other candidates are to collect 2 million signatures.
