Roughly 10 Eager to Run for Presidency
Russia’s Central Election Commission has data on ten potential candidates, who are eager to independently nominate themselves, Central Election Commission chief Vladimir Churov announced in the air of Russian News Service. “Overall, we have the data on roughly ten potential candidates. There are practically no big names amid them,” the official specified.
The first meetings of initiative groups in support of the candidates that nominate themselves are slated for this weekend, Churov reminded. Each initiative group should include at least 500 people.
“The initiators are to invite us [representatives of Central Election Commission] to the meeting. Then, he [the self-nominated candidate] should hand in all documents to us, and, if we decide that the meeting has been convened in line with the law, he will be able to start collecting 2 million signatures,” Churov said.
“Only the parties that passed to the State Duma may put forward presidential candidates without collecting the signatures,” the official pointed out.
Some 100 will probably attempt to run for presidency at first, Churov forecasted not long ago. “I expect rather big number of candidates at the first stage, roughly 100 persons, perhaps,” Churov said, explaining that it won’t be difficult for a candidate to attract 500 to a meeting and nominate himself there.
But a sizeable portion of candidates won’t pass the second stage, when they are expected to collect 2 million signatures, Churov forecasted.
The political parties may put forward their presidential candidates till December 23, 2007, while the deadline for independent candidates is December 18.
