U.S. Missile Defense Proposals Disappointed Russia
Russia is disappointed with the U.S. proposals for stationing a missile defense shield in Eastern Europe, RF Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced.
“We are disappointed that the ideas that were going seemingly in the rather good direction have materialized into the paper adding nothing new to the situation that existed before the two-plus-two meeting in Moscow,” Lavrov said.

According to Lavrov, new proposals of the United States no longer mention the permanent presence of Russia’s soldiers in the military bases in the Czech Republic and Poland. Instead, the document provides for some partial visits of Russia’s envoys to the bases should the authorities of Poland and Czechia agree to it, Russia’s foreign minister pointed out.

What’s more, the U.S. written proposals miss the previously declared plan of actions, whereby Russia and the U.S. would jointly decide on setting into motion the third position area with regard to new challenges and threats.

The general unwillingness of Washington to take seriously Moscow proposals on missile defense isn’t surprising actually. From time to time, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice expresses readiness to mull over the aspects of joint security with Russia, always specifying, however, that stationing ten interceptors in Poland and a radar in the Czech Republic is a decided matter already. Besides, Washington is currently strongly displeased with Russia’s suspension of the CFE Treaty.
