ISS Sets to New Sessions of Plasma Crystal Research
Russia’s cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko sets to another sessions of the Plasma Crystal Research. The research deserves the Nobel prize, Rossia TV Channel reported with reference to the scientists’ opinion.
The equipment delivered to the ISS in late 2005 was finally adjusted past week and it is possible to proceed to new sessions now. Launched at Mir station, the Plasma Crystal Research has been carried out in the orbit for nearly ten years already.
Plasma crystals are a new kind of matter, rediscovered in 1994. They form under certain conditions in a complex dusty plasma. The experiment provides for studying physical properties in the plasma crystals at different pressure of inert gas and at different power of high-frequency generation in the micro-gravity environment.
The Plasma Crystal Research is expected to elaborate technology of creating and controlling well-ordered structures of charged solid dust particles in the plasma. It will also improve understanding of planets’ emergence and provide applied knowledge for crystals.
