Putin Suspended CFE Treaty
Russia’s President Vladimir Putin inked the Federal Act on Suspending the Treaty on Conventional Forces in Europe by the Russian Federation, the president’s news service reported.
Russia has suspended the CFE Treaty that was signed in Paris November 19, 1990. The Act takes force on the day of official promulgation.

Only the RF president may decide on resuming the effect of the CFE Treaty in Russia.

Putin set into motion the treaty’s suspension by sealing the respective ruling on July 14, 2007. The lower house of Russia’s parliament, the State Duma, passed the bill November 7, 2007, and the upper house, the Federation Council, approved it November 16, 2007.

Testing new missile and imposing moratorium on the CFE Treaty should be viewed as Russia’s response to ungrounded actions of partners, including the United States, for stationing the missile defense shield in Europe, Vladimir Putin said before signing the initial ruling.
