Russia, Canada to Mull Over Arctic Development
Russia’s Prime Minister Viktor Zubkov goes to Canada on a working visit November 29, 2007. In Ottawa, Zubkov will hold negotiations with his Canadian counterpart Stephen Harper.
Amid the highlights of Zubkov’s talks in Canada are cooperating in Arctic development and matching the transport corridors of the countries, a source in Russia’s cabinet told RBC.
“We have common initiatives for arranging the shortest communication between North America and Eurasia, both via the Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean,” the source said. “The matters at stake are the Arctic Bridge Project for delivering cargo between Murmansk and Churchill ports and the programs of cross-Polar communication.”
The prime ministers will also canvass cooperation in agrarian and industrial complex. The project of creating assembly facilities in Russia is “at extremely advanced stage,” the source said, specifying it is jointly developed by Rostselmash and Buhler Industries Inc.
The turnover of two countries isn’t big yet; it was just $2 billion in 2006, the source pointed out. But the indicator stepped up by nearly a fourth in the first half of this year. At the same time, the investments of Russia’s companies in economy of Canada are significant in amount, including because of the buy-out of LionOre Corp. by Norilsk Nickel and the purchase of Magna International stocks by Basic Element.
