Lavrov Praised U.S. for Mideast Settlement Efforts
Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov appreciated the results of Mideast conference in Annapolis, Maryland. The minister also praised the U.S. efforts to find wording for an agreement signed by envoys of Palestine and Israel.
“I think it has been a very useful event. As you know, President Putin immediately backed up this initiative of President Bush when it was put forward in summer,” Lavrov told Russia’s reporters on board a plane on his way to Moscow.

“In this respect, I would note the efforts of American arrangers of the meeting for finding the wording required so that the document could emerge, As a result, Olmert and Abbas signed it,” Lavrov pointed out.

According to Lavrov, the document sets forth desire to bring negotiations to signing a peace treaty that will specify parameters of the State of Palestine and Israel. A taskforce of the United States, Israel and Palestine (led by the U.S. of course) will be set up to monitor how Palestine and Israel fulfill their Road Map commitments.

The positive effect of Russia on Annapolis conference, Lavrov said, was adding the problems of Syria and Lebanon to its agenda. Exactly that effort ensured that the Arab world was represented nearly in whole at the conference.
